Joan M. (Duffy) Smith, wife of John A.W. Smith. Beloved mother of Jennifer Smith, Joanie Adams (Greg), Julia Lapenson (the late Mitch), and Jacquelyn McGinly (Kevin). Loving grandmother of Ryan Smith (Ashley), Justina Lusena (Brian), Brittany Haley (Kevin), Eric Rader (Lacey), the late Elizabeth Rader, Emma McGinly, Meghan McGinly, Jack Adams, Kevin McGinly, Jr., Cole Lapenson, Shane McGinly, Jason Adams, and Abby Lapenson. Proud great-grandmother of Sienna, Dominic, Julianna, Ava, Avery, and the late Gabriella Rose.

Joan passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. A lifelong resident of Lawndale, she was a devoted member of St. William Parish. Her faith was precious to her, as was her family. Joan and John shared 58 wonderful years of marriage.

Her children and grandchildren were always her first priority — she could never do enough for her family. She loved hosting parties and baking cakes; any occasion would do! Joan was a Registered Nurse and spent the bulk of her career at Philadelphia Protestant Home, where geriatrics/elder care was her specialty. She will be missed tremendously by all who loved her.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at St. William Church, 6200 Rising Sun Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing at the church on Wednesday from 8:45 AM to 10:00 AM. Interment will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the March of Dimes in Joan’s memory.
