Barbara Aikens, born February 23, 1941, passed away surrounded by the love of the family she cherished so deeply. She was the second of eight siblings and grew up in Warminster, Pennsylvania, where she attended William Tennent High School. During her high school years, Barbara excelled in athletics, playing field hockey, basketball, and softball — a reflection of the competitive spirit and determination she carried throughout her life.
After graduation, she met and married the love of her life, Charles Aikens. They shared 30 years of marriage until his passing in 1991. During this time, Barbara also spent the majority of her working life at the family restaurant, Zintners Tavern, something she truly loved because it allowed her to meet so many people and build lifelong friendships. It became more than a job — it was an extension of her home and heart.
Barbara was more than a mother — she was our first coach and biggest fan. She spent countless hours coaching field hockey, softball, football, and baseball, always encouraging, guiding, and cheering us on. She was also a dedicated member and President of the CB West Football Mother’s Club, which she thoroughly enjoyed, especially hosting Sunday dinners for the football players. She also participated in Fractured Follies, a Lenape Valley Recreation Council show, where her fun spirit and love for community shined.
Her dedication extended beyond sports; she was a fierce protector of both family and those she welcomed as family. Her home was always open, and her heart was always bigger than the moment.
She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and playing cards, but nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by the people she loved. Her greatest purpose in life was family. She treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and sisters, always finding reasons to gather and celebrate together.
Barbara is survived by her four children: Maureen Aikens Mankowich and Paul; Charles “Chuckie” Aikens and Rebecca; Shannon Aikens; and Jim McNutt and Kelli. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Jessica, Cassie, Kelly, Matt, Jordan, Evan, Lucas, Ryan, and Emmaline, and her two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Lilah, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her strength, generosity, and unconditional love will live on in the family she built and the lives she touched.
We love you, Mom. We miss you. Rest in peace.
